Zithromax (azithromycin) for Dogs and Cats

Zithromax is used to treat bacterial infections of the skin and soft tissue, respiratory, urinary, skin and soft tissue, dental, eye and back. Zithromax works by preventing the growth of bacteria and acts by inhibiting the protein synthesis in bacteria. This prevents the growth of bacteria from inside the body and helps to reduce the number of bacteria that are becoming resistant to treatment.

How Zithromax Works for Cats

The way Zithromax works is to inhibit the protein synthesis in bacteria which prevents the growth of bacteria from growing. This prevents the bacteria from producing proteins that are essential to survival. Without proteins, bacteria cannot grow, replicate, and spread and is harmful to them. Zithromax is excreted in the body in small amounts and is usually taken orally one to two hours before a meal.

It is important to follow the prescribed schedule for you and your pet when taking Zithromax. If you take too much Zithromax, you and your pet will not be able to effectively take the medication and your pet may not respond to the treatment. Before using Zithromax, your veterinarian may occasionally evaluate your pet to determine the effectiveness of the treatment.

Zithromax may cause side effects in some dogs and cats. Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and increased appetite. However, in some cases, some have been reversible and/or they may improve. If any of these effects persist or worsen, or if you are concerned, contact your veterinarian.
